Three-dimensional Simulations of the Mean Air Transport During the 1997 Forest Fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia Using a Mesoscale Numerical Model

چکیده
This paper describes the meteorological processes responsible for the mean transport of air pollutants during the ENSO-related forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia from 00 UTC 21 September to 00 UTC 25 September, 1997. The Fifth Generation of the Pennsylvania State University-National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU-NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5) is used to simulate three-dimensional winds at 6-hourly intervals. A nonhydrostatic version of the model is run using two nested grids with horizontal resolutions of 45 km and 15 km. From the simulated wind fields, the backward and forward trajectories of the air parcel are investigated using the Vis5D model. The results indicate that the large-scale subsidence over Indonesia, the southwest monsoon low-level flows (2–8 m s), and the shallow planetary boundary layer height (400–800 m) play a key role in the transport of air pollutants from Kalimantan to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

Fire Impacts and Carbon Release on Tropical Peatlands in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia
During 1997 and 1998 intensive land irrigation and clearance activities in Indonesia, combined with a greatly extended ENSO-related dry season, created conditions for several months of forest fires. Fires were particularly intense in the lowland peatlands of Kalimantan and Sumatra where both forest and peat fires occurred. A 24,910 km (2.491 MHa) study area in Central Kalimantan has been used t...
متن کاملPalm oil plantation waste handling by smallholder and the correlation with the land fire
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: From August to October 2019, several provinces in Sumatra and Kalimantan had faced severe forest fires, causing thousands of citizens to suffer respiratory disorders. This study aims to assess waste handling in palm oil plantation manage by smallholders and the correlation palm oil plantation waste handling with the fireland in Sumatera, especially on...
متن کاملA Spatio-Temporal Analysis on the forest Fire Occurrence in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia
Fire is a disaster that causes adverse effects to forests, ecosystems and human life in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Enhancing technologies that monitor fires could reduce the occurrence of these disasters. In order to develop a robust fire monitoring system, a deep understanding of fire behaviour is needed. This study focuses on the investigation of spatial and temporal factors influencing f...
متن کاملEffects of Fires on Peat Swamp and Lowland Dipterocarp Forests in Kalimantan, Indonesia
The effects of the fires that burned over 4.7 million ha of Indonesia’s tropical forests during 1997 and 1998 are largely unknown. We assess the immediate impacts of these fires on five forest areas representing several different habitats in Kalimantan 1-2 months after the fires went out. Comparisons of transects in burned and unburned forest areas were conducted at three sites: Tanjung Puting ...

Objective(s): Multifunctional nanomedicine is the new generation of medicine, which is remarkably promising and associated with the minimum toxicity of targeted therapy. Distribution and transport of nanoparticles (NPs) in the blood flow are essential to the evaluation of delivery efficacy. Materials and Methods: In the present study, we initially designed a phantom based on Murray’s mini...
